Celebrating National Pizza Month: Salvo’s 5 Fun Pizza Facts

Since the 80s we’ve been celebrating National Pizza Month in October up and down the country. Whether you’re craving the perfect crust or a cheese sensation, Salvo’s is the number one choice for pizza delivery.

I guess we can call it an addiction that we have, a compulsion to pull out our phone and tap in pizza near me. Our love of pizza and the search for the perfect slice of dough stretches all the way back to 997 AD. Little has changed in the way our ancestors prepared their pie but the controversy is mammoth. A question similar to the meaning of life — pineapple on pizza —  yay or nay? Some die-hard pizza aficionados will find this completely sacrilegious while others see it as heavenly.

But is pizza strictly Italian food?

That’s another debatable point as pizza has evolved over the years. Every civilization had their own take. The Egyptians had flatbreads as well as the Greeks and Romans, albeit the toppings may have been different but the notion stays the same. Simplicity at best involves a fluffy dough baked in a wood-fired oven with toppings of choice. The modern day pizza that we know and love today actually is Italian with the first Italian restaurant Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba baking pizzas in 1738 catering to the influx of tourists visiting Naples. 150 years later pizzamaker, or Pizzaiolo, Raffaele Esposito created the classic “Pizza Margherita” for Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy.

Salvo’s is commemorating the nation’s love of the divine slice with some fun facts to top off.

  1. As a nation we love our pizza pie so much we eat roughly 100 acres of pizza everyday according to the National Association of Pizza Operators which equals to a mountainous 350 slices every second.
  2. The most expensive pizza in the world will set you back $12,000! Created by Renato Viola for a select crowd in Salerno, the 20cm pizza for two cut into quarters would be $3000 a slice.
  3. Pepperoni is the pizza topping of choice. We love pepperoni so much that we order 251.7 million pounds of this meaty topping annually in the United States on pizza. 36% of all pizzas ordered have the pepperoni topping.
  4. On Friday 20th of January 2023, the largest pizza in the world was baked and is a Guiness World Record. The ingredients were 13,653 pounds of dough, 4,948 pounds of marinara sauce, 8,800 pounds of cheese and 630,496 slices of pepperoni.
  5. October is National Pizza Month! Created by the publisher of Pizza Today Magazine, Gerry Durnell in 1984. Perhaps Gerry created it because Halloween is one of the busiest days on the pizza calendar. Spooky, right?

The reality is that every month is National Pizza Month. There can be nothing better than a fresh, out of the oven hot pizza with the toppings to suit catering to the passionate devotees across the globe. That gorgeous, sumptuous slice glistening with gooey cheese that ultimately takes us to nirvana.

Salvo’s menu offers a smorgasbord of authentic flavors for those looking to dine in or order delivery, or are even in need of catering in Tennessee. From a classic Pizza Margherita, Pizza Pepperoni or your own creative combination. We keep to our motto:

“Let my family serve your family.”
